Many customers assume that outdoor LED screens are waterproof as long as the cabinet has an IP65 rating. In reality, most cases of water damage are not caused by leaks in the cabinet itself, but rather by oversights in the design details.

1. The module is the core

It’s not just about the casing; the LED module must be fully encapsulated with potting compound and sealed, with a moisture-proof coating applied to the back. Low-cost screens cut corners, making them prone to water seepage, which can cause LED failure and screen distortion.

2. Flat cables and connectors are high-risk areas

If power cords and flat cable connectors aren’t fitted with waterproof sealing sleeves, rainwater can seep along the wiring, leading to short circuits, power supply burnout, and control board damage.

3. Moisture Protection for Power Supplies and Control Boards

The biggest threats are humid weather and condensation from temperature fluctuations—failure isn’t limited to heavy rain. Moisture and condensation gradually corrode circuit boards, so corrosion-resistant and moisture-proof power supplies are essential.

4. Joints and Installation Structure

Waterproof sealant was not applied to the cabinet joints, and the sealing strips were of poor quality; the installation lacked a drainage slope, and the top had no rain eave, making it easy for rainwater to flow back into the display.

5. Cable Exit Holes on the Back Panel

Holes through which network cables and power cords pass were left unsealed, allowing rainwater to flow along the cables into the cabinet—a leak point that is easily overlooked.
