When purchasing rental LED displays, customers often ask: "Can the same screen be used both indoors and outdoors?" The answer is no. Outdoor and indoor rental LED screens are designed with fundamentally different standards. Using them interchangeably either compromises visual performance or damages the equipment.
Below we break down the key differences across three critical dimensions to help rental companies and integrators make the right choice.
1.Brightness: Outdoor Needs High Visibility, Indoor Needs Comfort
Outdoor rental screens face direct sunlight and require sufficient brightness to ensure a clear image. Generally, outdoor rental LEDs need 4,500–7,000 nits, and for open‑air stages or outdoor advertising, 10,000 nits or more may be required. Indoor environments have controlled lighting; excessive brightness is harsh on the eyes and causes visual fatigue. Indoor rental screens typically require only 800–1,500 nits.
Selection tip: Outdoor projects must use high‑brightness screens. For indoor projects, do not buy high‑brightness screens just for "versatility" – you will end up reducing brightness in software, wasting cost and compromising colour performance.
2.Waterproof & Protection Rating: IP65 vs. IP31
This is the most obvious difference. Outdoor rental screens must withstand rain, humidity, dust, and sand. They need effective waterproofing and dust protection. Industry standards require outdoor rental screens to achieve IP65 ingress protection (dust‑tight and protected against low‑pressure water jets). Indoor rental screens have no waterproof requirement; they are typically rated IP31 (protected against small particles and dripping water). Their backs are often open or semi‑enclosed to aid heat dissipation.
Selection tip: For outdoor projects, insist on IP65 waterproofing. Check seals around cabinet joints and waterproof connectors. For indoor projects, waterproofing is not needed, but pay attention to impact protection – choose cabinets with edge guards.
3.Cabinet Structure & Heat Dissipation
Outdoor rental screens operate in high temperatures (cabinet surface can exceed 60°C under direct sunlight) and must be sealed against water, so heat dissipation is critical. Common approaches include aluminium heat‑conductive structures, active fan cooling, or using die‑cast aluminium cabinets that passively dissipate heat through the metal enclosure. Cabinet thickness is usually greater (80–120mm) to leave room for cooling and cabling.
Indoor rental screens operate in stable temperatures and have low sealing requirements, making heat dissipation easier. Cabinets can be very slim – mainstream 500×500mm die‑cast aluminium cabinets are only 60–70mm thick, with a single cabinet weight of 6‑8 kg, making them easy to transport and quick to assemble.
Selection tip: For outdoor rental, give priority to die‑cast aluminium cabinets (light, strong, good heat dissipation). Steel cabinets are cheaper but heavier and prone to rust. For indoor rental, focus on assembly flatness and the convenience of locking mechanisms.
4.Other Differences
· Pixel pitch: Outdoor rental screens are typically P2.6 and above for long‑distance viewing; indoor rental screens can be P1.2–P2.5 for close‑up high‑definition viewing.
· Module surface: Outdoor modules need potting (glue filling) for waterproofing; indoor modules have no potting or only a light coating.
· Cables & connectors: Outdoor screens use waterproof aviation plugs; indoor screens use standard signal cables.
· Storage environment: Outdoor screens must be stored in a dry place away from high heat; indoor screens can be stored at room temperature.
